Germany · postgraduate

Low tuition is an advantage, not a complete pathway.

Germany rewards careful course matching. Prior modules, language, funding, location and the intended labour market can matter as much as the headline fee.

Fit

Who should consider Germany, and who should look harder.

It may fit when

The prior degree closely matches the programme’s named subject and credit prerequisites.

The applicant is ready to assess the language of study and the language of the intended workplace separately.

The total plan includes blocked funds, housing, insurance and semester costs, not only tuition.

Compare elsewhere when

The choice rests only on the idea of “free education”.

The programme is a large subject jump with weak evidence of prerequisite modules.

The career plan assumes English-only study automatically means an English-only labour market.

Cost, entry, work and the application route.

Cost and funds

State institutions generally charge no tuition for most master’s programmes, but state, programme, continuing-education and private-provider exceptions exist. Semester contributions still apply. The official own-funds benchmark for studying in 2026 is €992/month, or €11,904/year.

Entry and English

Check subject continuity, named module credits, grade conversion, language evidence and document format. An English-taught course can still benefit from German for internships and work.

Ask the counsellor to confirm these points for your chosen programme.

After successful graduation, a residence permit can support a skilled-employment search for up to 18 months.

Application route

Applications may go through uni-assist or directly to the institution. The provider and programme determine the route, documents, language evidence and deadlines.

Ask the counsellor to map the correct route for your intake.

Questions to discuss

What the country page cannot decide.

Do my previous modules satisfy the named subject prerequisites?

What language will I need for the roles I intend to pursue?

Which fee exception and semester charges apply to this programme?

Does the total two-year scenario still fit the debt ceiling?
