United Kingdom · postgraduate

A shorter degree does not make the decision simple.

The UK can compress study into a concentrated period, which makes course fit, cash flow and the date of completion unusually consequential.

Fit

Who should consider the UK, and who should look harder.

It may fit when

The prior degree and intended role create a coherent progression.

The course modules, accreditation and likely first role justify the total cost.

The budget works without depending on term-time work or an immediate graduate job.

Compare elsewhere when

The Graduate visa is the main reason for choosing the course.

The programme repeats prior study without creating a credible role change.

The loan needs a starting salary or job-search speed the evidence cannot support.

Graduate visa planning

Start the job search before graduation.

For new non-doctoral applicants, 18 months is the defensible planning assumption. The two-year duration is available only where an eligible Graduate visa application can be made by 31 Dec 2026 after successful course completion while the applicant is in the UK. Doctoral graduates remain eligible for three years.

Work and post-study

Eligible full-time degree-level students can usually work up to 20 hours/week in term time and full-time outside it. The conditions on the applicant’s visa remain decisive.

Application route

Programme research → entry check → document and English plan → application → offer conditions → funding and visa evidence. The order should be adjusted around the real intake deadline.

Ask the counsellor to map the sequence to your deadline and documents.

Questions to discuss

What the country page cannot decide.

Does this course add a skill my prior degree did not?

Which first role is realistic, not merely desirable?

What happens to repayment if job search takes six months longer?

What should I do from the first term to use an 18-month post-study runway well?
